Healthy snacking for children’s dental health

Good dental care for children goes further than brushing and flossing. A balanced diet that is rich in nutritious, low-sugar foods is also important for maintaining good oral health. We understand that kids may not go for broccoli and celery sticks, but there are plenty of tasty snacks you can prepare for hungry, healthy mouths.

Teeth-Friendly Snacks

Variety is the best way to go!

Low-fat dairy foods, fruits, vegetables, whole grains and healthy proteins such as seeds, nuts, legumes and lean meats are all part of a balanced diet that can support healthy teeth and gums. The following are all healthy snack ideas for kids. These supply the vitamins, minerals and other nutrients that young mouths need, and they taste good too:

  • Sliced, fresh watermelon-kids LOVE this!

  • Full fat yogurt with berries.

  • Celery sticks spread with cream cheese and sunflower seeds.

  • Cheddar cheese and apples.

  • Coconut flakes.

  • Unsalted almonds

  • Hummus with toasted whole grain pita triangles-MAKE IT INTO FUNNY FACES!

  • Crunchy veggies with dip.

When to Snack

Limit the number of snacks during the day to prevent cavities. Eating snacks frequently makes it easier for bacteria to flourish in the mouth and form plaque on your child’s teeth.

Sugars and Starches

Sugary treats like sweets and fizzy drinks are the obvious high-sugar foods that should be limited for not only kids, but adults too. Starchy foods, including cakes and breads that have been made with white flour, are high in carbohydrates, which quickly break down into sugars. A high-sugar, high-starch diet will increase mouth bacteria, which use the sugars to form acids that attack tooth enamel and demineralize teeth.

It isn’t always easy but it’s important to make wise food choices for kids. Eating a balanced diet and flossing and brushing twice daily with a fluoride toothpaste can prevent cavities. Also, make sure to make regular dental appointments for them. That’s the very best way to take care of their little smiles!
